about her about us gallery home

"You are on a path in the woods. And at the end of that path is a cabin. And in the basement of that cabin is a princess. You're here to slay her. If you don't, it will be the end of the world."

The Princess is the major character of her source being the titular character of the game, she and the player are at the heart of the game’s metanarrative. The game starts with you in the woods and are told by a mysterious Narrator that there’s a Princess locked in a cabin who’s capable of ending the world and to prevent that from happening we must slay her.

you could question the Narrator, argue with him, refuse, blindly accept the task or even walk away. This is very much a “your choices matter” game because the Princess’ true nature is directly tied to your actions and how you choose to engage with and perceive her. even the simple action of whether or not you pick up the blade when going down to the basement decides whether or not she’s soft or cold to the player.

She contains multitudes

So what is the Princess? Well, I think there are about 24 different Princesses in game, all differing in appearance and personality but they are only fragments of a larger being: The Shifting Mound, a god and the concept of change itself. The Narrator, in an effort to rid of death split her in two halves ‘The Shifting Mound’ representing change and us ‘The Long Quiet’ representing stasis and gave us the task to slay her.

Why is she a Princess then? When we were split in two The Narrator wove the idea of her into something The Long Quiet could fathom; and we chose for that something to be a princess. ♡ ♡
